Purple Warriors split district games with Gunter and Howe
Over the weekend, the unbeaten Bonham Purple Warriors took down the Gunter Tigers on the hardwood in their district opener by a final score of 36-26. On Monday, Bonham lost for the first time all season in a 39-35 defeat against the Howe Bulldogs.
In their game against Gunter, the Purple Warriors relied heavily on their interior players. Bonham’s 6-foot-3 senior big man Jerry Arrey was dominant down low on both ends of the floor. Along with his strong defensive presence in the paint, Arrey scored a game-high 14 points. In addition to Arrey’s winning efforts, senior Michael Crosby added to the cause with 8 points of his own. On the perimeter, Tanner Reaves was impactful with 12 points.
With the Bonham bigs anchoring the team in its success, the Purple Warriors defense was able to clamp down on Gunter. Bonham did not allow Gunter to score more than 9 points in any quarter of the game.
In their next district contest, Bonham went toe to toe with the Howe Bulldogs but ultimately came up just short in a four-point defeat.
The difference boiled down to the first quarter when it was all said and done. The Bulldogs notched 12 points in the first quarter while Bonham managed to score 8 points of its own. The loss was Bonham’s first defeat of the season. Arrey led the way with 10 points as the Purple Warriors’ only double-figure scorer. Mason Rodriguez also chipped in with 7 points.
Bonham (11-1, 1-1) will take the court again for its third district contest at 7:30 p.m. tonight at home against the Pottsboro Cardinals (9-1, 2-0). For more sports coverage, click here.
