Chisum Mustangs impress home crowd with 73-50 win over DeKalb
In their seventh game of the regular season, the Chisum Mustangs impressed their home fans in a big way on Tuesday night. For the fourth time in a row, the Mustangs won on the hardwood by defeating the visiting DeKalb Bears by a final score of 73-50.
At the half, Chisum (6-1) was holding onto a 35-27 lead. However, the Mustangs ramped up the intensity in the second half. Even though DeKalb was able to notch 15 points in the third quarter, the Mustangs were better.
Chisum exploded for a 24-point third quarter, and junior guards Worm Price and Evan Wood led the charge. The junior guards combined to score all but three of Chisum’s points in the third frame and, by the end of the quarter, the Mustangs held a 59-42 advantage.
The Mustangs’ only loss came at the hands of the Paris Wildcats, and each of the Chisum’s previous six wins came by a margin of at least eight points or more. Price, Wood, and Keaston Lawrence are each averaging more than 14 points per game thus far in the regular season.
Price led Chisum with a game-high 23 points, while Wood scored 18 points. Jett Petkus added 11 points off the bench and nailed three of his four 3-point attempts. Lawrence scored 10 points and 8 assists while Levi Weems recorded 6 points. Ramaj Vaughn paced the Bears with a team-high 14 points.
The Mustangs will take the court again at 6 p.m. Friday at home against the Cooper Bulldogs. For more sports coverage, click here.
