UIL football playoffs set to kick off this week

Following the conclusion of the regular season on Friday, a myriad of high school football teams in the state of Texas began gearing up for their respective postseason runs. The postseason bracket will begin with bi-district matchups on Thursday, and there are several local teams in the upcoming playoff fray.

The Paris Wildcats suffered a 28-7 home loss against the top-ranked Argyle Eagles to end the 2020 regular season. The Wildcats remained in the top 10 state rankings most of the year. Paris pulled this off in spite of being forced to forfeit their first two district ball games against Melissa and Anna due to issues regarding COVID-19 exposure.

Regardless of the road bumps, Paris pushed through and finished third place in the district standings. With that, the Wildcats will face Dallas Lincoln in the bi-district round at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sprague Stadium in Dallas. Tickets can be purchased online, and all tickets cost $5 per person.

Meanwhile, the Chisum Mustangs are also dancing into the postseason. For the second time in three seasons, Chisum punched its ticket to the postseason by virtue of its fourth-place finish this year. Chisum secured its playoff berth more than two weeks ago following its 36-28 home win over DeKalb. In their finale, the Mustangs fell at Daingerfield by a final score of 53-27.

On Thursday, Chisum will play in its bi-district game against West Rusk at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Pittsburg Pirate Stadium in Pittsburg. Tickets will be available for purchase Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Chisum ISD Administration building. Social distancing and masks will be required for attendees, and stadium capacity will be limited due to the pandemic.

More local bi-district football

In Fannin County, the Leonard Tigers will move on to the postseason after claiming the fourth seed of their district. The Tigers will face the Palmer Bulldogs, the champions of District 7-3A, Division II of Region II. The Mustangs and Bulldogs will square off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Farmer Stadium in Farmersville.

In other local bi-district playoff action, the Cooper Bulldogs will play against Trenton at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium in Commerce. The Rivercrest Rebels will also take the field against Collinsville at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Warrior Stadium in Bonham. The Detroit Eagles will also compete in the postseason at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Chilton Pirates at Panther Stadium in Mabank. For more sports coverage, click here.
