Pottsboro pulls away from Prairiland in Bi-District battle

On Thursday night, the Prairiland Lady Patriots faced the Pottsboro Lady Cardinals in the Bi-District round of the playoffs inside of Wildcat Gymnasium at Paris High School. When the teams met in the same postseason round on the volleyball court, Prairiland emerged victorious in straight sets. On the basketball court, though, the Lady Cardinals got revenge in the form of a 61-36 win.

Prairiland (15-10, 7-3) hung tough with Pottsboro in the early going as senior post Hannah Murdock muscled in a layup with 1:38 left of the first quarter. At this point, the Lady Patriots closed to within 12-8 of Pottsboro. However, the Lady Cardinals closed the first quarter on a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 17-8.

The second quarter followed a similar script as Prairiland remained within single digits of Pottsboro through most of the quarter until Pottsboro put forth another strong effort to close out the quarter — again. Lady Pats senior point guard Malorie Sneed drove into the painted area and found junior Abi Farmer, who swished a baseline jumper with 3:54 left before the half to close within 20-11. Pottsboro increased its lead to 24-11 but Farmer splashed a corner 3-pointer with 20 seconds remaining to trim the halftime deficit to 24-14.

Murdock and Farmer scored on back-to-back possessions in the later stages of the third quarter to cut the deficit to 33-25 with 3:45 left. Farmer scored from outside once again to cut Pottsboro’s lead to eight points. The Lady Patriots stayed within striking distance the rest of the way until the fourth quarter when Pottsboro continued to penetrate the paint and toss in shots from outside the 3-point arc. In the end, Pottsboro recorded the win by 25 points.

Seniors T.J. Folse and Murdock led the way with 10 points apiece for Prairiland while Farmer scored 8 points. Sneed added 4 points while juniors Ali Sessums and Kiersten Bridges each had 2 points. Bridges and Farmer also recorded back-to-back blocks during a single second-quarter offensive possession for Pottsboro. Senior point guard Autumn Graley led Pottsboro with a game-high 15 points while senior post Hadley Williams added 9 points.

As the Lady Patriots season ends, Pottsboro will move on to face Ponder in the Area Round. Prairiland will graduate Folse, Murdock, Erika Sims, and Sneed from this year’s team. For more sports coverage, click here.
