Lady ’Cats and Pantherettes square off tonight to break third-place tie in district

Following their final regular-season matches on Friday, this crosstown rivalry’s battle for bragging rights is figuratively headed into overtime. The North Lamar Pantherettes defeated Pittsburg at home in straight sets, but Paris was tripped up in five sets in Texarkana playing against Pleasant Grove.

Had Paris won the match against the Lady Hawks, Paris would have claimed sole possession of third place on Friday with North Lamar taking fourth. However, the Lady Hawks came back from a two to one deficit in sets to bring forth tonight’s tiebreaker.

What’s at stake for these two rivals?

Paris and North Lamar share identical 5-5 records in district play and the winner will take third place. The loser will be seeded fourth in the district. This match is especially important for both teams to avoid a match right out of the gates against Lindale (26-0, 12-0).

The mighty No. 2-ranked Lady Eagles of Class 4A are undefeated on the season. In addition to this, Lindale has only dropped five total sets on the season including just one set in district play. Before this season, Lindale competed in Class 5A since the 2014-15 school year.

The loser of the crosstown tiebreaker plays Lindale while the winner would get a shot at playing No. 13-ranked Bullard. The Lady Panthers are also formidable but both teams see Bullard as a more favorable bi-district matchup. Paris traveled to Bullard earlier this season and clipped the Lady Panthers in five tight sets on Friday, Sept. 4. The final score was 14-25, 19-25, 25-19, 28-26, and 17-15. Paris’ win provides either team with the confidence needed to potentially take on and possibly beat Bullard.

Settling the score on multiple fronts tonight

The Pantherettes and Lady ’Cats each recorded a win on each others’ home court. North Lamar swept Paris on Friday, Oct. 2 in Wildcat Gymnasium. The Lady ’Cats got their revenge Tuesday, Oct. 20 by virtue of their five-set win at North Lamar.

With postseason implications on the line, the rubber match will take place at 6 p.m. tonight in Mustang Gymnasium at Chisum High School. For more sports coverage, click here.
