Bonham pulls away from scrappy Patriots late to remain unbeaten

On Friday night, the Bonham Purple Warriors saw their undefeated record put to the test against the Prairiland Patriots. The teams squared off in Pattonville with visiting Bonham racing out to a large lead. Prairiland did mount a strong charge following a tough first quarter, but Bonham was able to pull away late in the contest to secure a 63-48 win.

Late in the first quarter, Bonham held a lead as large as 22-4. However, the Patriots closed out the first half from that point with a 27-10 scoring advantage. Trailing 32-27 at the break, the Patriots came back onto the court with the same level of energy. Prairiland continued to inch closer and eventually took a 37-36 lead in the third frame after a layup from junior guard Brooks Morrison. However, junior guard Mason Rodriguez canned a 3-pointer in the corner on Bonham’s ensuing possession to take the lead for good at 39-37.

After Rodriguez sank the long ball in the corner later in the third quarter, Bonham regained the game’s momentum. The Purple Warriors executed on offense and played sharp on defense down the stretch despite a strong challenge from Prairiland the rest of the way.

Patriots senior post Ryan Butler and guard Eli Rolen kept the pressure on the Purple Warriors down low and on the perimeter. However, timely buckets and big blocks down low from 6-foot-3 senior post Jerry Arrey, clutch shots on the perimeter from star senior guard Tanner Reeves, and plenty of other valuable contributions across the board allowed Bonham to gradually pull away for the 15-point victory.

Reeves paced the Purple Warriors with a game-high 19 points, while Arrey, Crosby, and Rodriguez each scored 10 points. Avery Coker added 6 points, while Brant Stuber chipped in with 3 points. Cam Bush and Dustan Sewell each contributed with 2 points, while Jackson Davis had 1 point and put forth another strong effort defensively.

Butler led Prairiland with 9 points, while Mason Day chipped in with 7 points and physical play on both ends of the court. Rolen and Brylee Galloway contributed with 6 points apiece, while Blake Ballard and Jeremiah Harrison each added 5 points for the Pats. Morrison and Blake Lewis combined for 7 points, while Gage Bankhead and Braydan Nichols had 3 points combined.

With the win, Bonham moved to 6-0 on the year while Prairiland slipped to 3-3 on the season. Both teams played again on Saturday with Bonham recording a 50-32 win over Trenton and Prairiland earning a 62-38 victory over Sam Rayburn. With their respective wins, Bonham and Prairiland improved their records to 7-0 and 4-3 overall.
