Mavericks pummel Clippers to historic proportions in 51-point victory
On Sunday, the Dallas Mavericks earned their first win of the season in dominant fashion to say the least. The Mavs (1-2) won in Tinseltown against the Los Angeles Clippers (2-1) who were without the services of superstar forward Kawhi Leonard. The Clippers’ forward missed Sunday’s game against the Mavericks due to sustaining an injury in a previous win over the Denver Nuggets that required eight stitches.
In this contest, the Mavericks got off to a blazing hot start and never looked back in building a 50-point halftime lead at 77-27. From there, Dallas coasted to a 124-73 victory, leading by as many as 57 points.
Clippers star Paul George drained a 20-foot jumper in the opening seconds of the first quarter to give the Clippers their only lead at 2-0 with 11:41 left in the first quarter. However, the Mavericks went on to outscore Los Angeles 36-13 in that quarter and 41-14 in the second quarter. Luka Doncic had 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in the first half alone for Dallas. He finished with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists in just 26 minutes of work.
The Mavericks made 34.1 percent of their 3-point attempts (14-for-41) compared to 12.1 percent for the Clippers (4-for-33). Dallas shot 49.4 percent (43-for-87) from the field overall, while Los Angeles shot 34.2 percent (26-for-76) from the field. Also, the Mavs grabbed 58 rebounds to 42 boards for the Clippers.
The Mavericks will play again at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at home against the Charlotte Hornets. Meanwhile, the Clippers will try to bounce back at 9 p.m. Tuesday at home against the Minnesota Timberwolves. For more sports coverage, click here.
