Likely top pick Trevor Lawrence declares for 2021 NFL Draft
The Clemson Tigers football team was recently eliminated from the 2021 College Football Playoff by the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Allstate Sugar Bowl CFP National Semifinal game. Now, the Tigers saw their star quarterback Trevor Lawrence declare for this year’s 2021 NFL Draft. Lawrence announced his decision on Twitter in a video posted on his account on Tuesday.
“My time here has been amazing, and I’ll be a Clemson Tiger forever,” Lawrence said in the video. “To all my teammates over the past three years, it’s been the most fun ride I’ve been on. I’ll look back on these last three years and have the best memories.”
Many experts believe Lawrence will be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the top overall pick in the draft. Lawrence’s head coach at Clemson, Dabo Swinney, believes his quarterback is “the greatest winner he’s ever been around.”
The winning quarterback Swinney is referring to accomplished a great deal in his three seasons with Clemson. As a freshman, Lawrence led the Tigers to a 44-16 romp over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2018 CFP National Championship game. Overall, Lawrence finished 34-2 as a starter at Clemson and finished top-three in program history with his 10,098 passing yards (third) and 90 passing touchdowns (second). He also carried the ball 231 times for 943 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns over his three-season career with the Tigers.
The presumptive top overall pick was also active off the field this season. He helped organize a social justice movement on the Clemson campus over the summer and was a key figure in the #WeWantToPlay movement that eventually led to the inception of the college football season amidst the coronavirus pandemic.
The main hope and goal for Lawrence had nothing to do with the wins, numbers, and accolades. Instead, he desires people to remember him for his character.
“Looking back on it, I hope my legacy is that I was a great teammate and a great person overall, more than how I played,” Lawrence said. “It’s how I treated people. I want that to be the main thing I’m known for.”
